Bordeaux is made famous by its big names. Places like Chateau Haut Brion, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite, Latour and Margaux. But combined, these historic classified properties represent less than 5% of the overall wine production in the region. Chateau Darzac has been in the Barthe family for 220 years, and their 2019 vintage is shaping up to be an excellent one. That summer was searing, one of the hottest on record. The vines on thicker clay soils tended to retain more water, ultimately performing better, and the sizzling heat of summer ensured grapes were rich in sugar. On the Right Bank, the wines tend to be intensely concentrated with Merlot standing out as being particularly generous, with sophisticated tannins and aromatic qualities favoring elegance over raw power. A smooth, fruity wine with soft tannins, and flavors of raspberry, cherry, blackberry, and fig, Chateau Darzac is a top value under $15!
"Spiced cassis and licorice are abundant on the nose. The palate is silky and juicy with nicely resolved underlying tannins that carry along blackberries, cassis, violet and licorice. Tasty!" The Wine Buyer, 90 Points
